I just bought a toy breed12 week old pup. Crate train or pee pee pad train. I don't like keeping her confined.

She gets crated at night, but during the daytime when the kids and I am home we take her often to her pee pee pad. She is doing well for only 1 1/2 days we have had her.

i have huge issues with pee pads. in my opinion you are telling the dog it's ok to pee in the house. they may pee on the pad for now, but many dogs eventually start peeing elsewhere. and by then it's more difficult to correct since you have spent so much time telling them it's ok to pee in the house. if you have no problems with your dog peeing in the house keep on using the pads. if you want your dog to go outside, which is preferable to me stop using the pads immediatly. sounds like you are doing a great job so far, would it be that much harder to take her outside instead of to a pad? crate training done right is not confusing to the dog and makes your life simpler. the crate should never be a punishment and you are working with your dog's basic instincts to be confined to a "den" type of area they can call their own. many dogs learn to love a crate and will go to it even without being told. also this is a great place for the dog to know it can go if the children are bothering it too much. i tell my daughter that the dog has put herself in timeout and she needs to leave her alone. my dog knows that when she's in her crate she will not be bothered by anyone. puppies should not be confined to the crate for long periods of time, but should be placed in the crate whenever you cannot directly watch them. this not only keeps the dog safe, since puppies will chew and get into anything they can, but you won't have to worry about the dog having an accident that you didn't catch the puppy in the act of.

little dogs shouldn't go more than bigger dogs. their bladders are proportionate to the amount of food and water intake and the waste they need to get rid of, the same way a big dog is. this is why little dogs eat less than a big dog. if your little dog is going all of the time and is not a growing puppy you need to have it vet checked. and if you decide to stay with the pads, don't use newspaper to save money. what will you do when you are reading the sunday paper or the kids leave their homework on the floor and the dog comes over and pees and poos on it? you can't get mad at the dog because it's doing what you've trained it to do.
CRATE TRAIN!!
Those pee pads train your dog to go to the bathroom in the middle of a room. WORST idea if you are looking to housetrain a pet. Dogs trained on the pads will go to the bathroom on carpets, throw rugs, etc.
Why are you using a pad? Don't you want her to learn to go outside? That's where you should be taking her to go to the bathroom, unless you want her to go inside for the rest of her life.
Crate train.. If you are home during the day you don't keep her in the crate all the time. You put her in the crate at night, when you go out and when you can't watch her. While you are home you take her out OFTEN, praise when she goes and keep your eye on her.
Pee pads mess them up.. Teaches them it's okay to pee in the house.. Today it's on the pee pad, tomorrow it's on the couch.
Do both!! And teach them to go on grass.
I have two toy poodles. I crate them often when I am not home. They feel more secure and they are safe (from our other dog and teenaged kids). But the pads work well for while they are out of the crate. Little dogs have to go a lot, and it helps if they have a place to go in the house.
If you pad train her be aware that you can never leave a cloth or paper lying around on the floor.
Pee pads do work pretty good but they are expensive. Plain old newspaper will work fine. Just place it where the puppy first goes pee or poo, then gradually move the paper closer and closer where you want him to go. Tell him what a good boy or girl he or she is when they go where you want them to and never punish or hit the animal. The younger you start them the quicker they'll learn.
It takes time and patience, I have a six month old miniture toy poodle and she is just now going outside all of the time. I have read some material on this and after the puppy eats or drinks you need to take the puppy to the pee pee pad or outside or whatever twenty minutes later. See if this helps you. Also I have found that if my puppy goes outside if I give her treats then that will encourage her to go out more. She really improved when I started this. My puppies favorite treats is Canine Carryouts the beef and cheese. These are soft and easy to chew for puppies. Hope that this helps you. (I buy my treats at Wal-Mart.)
