I just got a puppy and she is refusing to go potty outside. She will only go in her cage... HELP!?

No matter how long I have her outside for she waits until she is back in her cage to go. How can I fix this problem??
Answers:
No matter how long?
My guess is that if you wait long enough she will eventually go where you want her to. Waiting long enough may be a couple of hours... which means she already has great bladder control.. which means she'll be realllllly easy to housetrain... lucky you!
There are two things you need to look at:
1. Is her crate small enough? A puppy will go in a crate more readily if it is too big... and if it has things to soak up or bury the mess in. Get a smaller crate.
2. Where did you get her? Puppymill (petstore) and pups raised in unclean surroundings (pen with a pile of newspapers or pineshavings) are more likely to be "messy". It then becomes your job to teach her that being clean is a good thing.
You may need to take an ENTIRE weekend (from Friday evening until Monday morning) to dedicate yourself to getting her housetrained. During that time you need to watch her at all times when you are not asleep. To set yourself up for success you'll want to make sure she has LOTS of opportunities as well as need to potty. You can blenderize canned dogfood in with water (baited water) so she drinks lots. Hold off on feeding her or halve her feeding so she's hungry and she'll drink more. Use her food as treats when she succeeds in pottying where she needs to. Watch her in her crate. When she looks like she may be needing to potty dash her outside and WAIT. You've set up the weekend to curing the problem so waiting an hour or two isn't a bad thing... eventually she will go. When she does.. celebrate.. its a party... give her praise and cookies etc.. etc...
During the weekend training know that if she pottys in the crate it is because YOU weren't watching. Roll up a newspaper and whap yourself on the head.
People who own cages shouldn't have animals..
take her on a walk and encourage her to sniff around on a neighbor's mail box because its a common potty spot for dogs. she might feel the need to mark her place and then she will realize that pottying outdoors isnt so bad. maybe her cage is too big!? dogs will potty in one area and sleep in the other in a too big cage. good luck!
i just got a puppy too but when he goes potty inside.. i point at him and tell him NO and i put him outside for a few minutes
What We Have To Do With Our Puppy Is.
First, Sneak Some Treats In Your Pocket... But Dont Let The Puppy See You.
Second, Agknowledge Your Puppy... Bring It Outside ...
Third, Tell The Puppy To Go Pee In A Gentle Voice ( Do This A Few Times )
And If She Does, Celebrate By Saying Good girl/boy !! And Giving Her A Treat...
This may take a few times before she gats used to going on her own .
If she is NOT and indoor dog put here in a larger cage with a gate outside so she lives outside. if she IS an indoor dog then about every half an hour put her outside and tell her t use the bathroom. she eventually will get used to it. Best of luck!- Spinner
When you take her outside make sure you always take her to the same spot and maybe even tell her a magic word like get busy every time. Perhaps (as gross as it sounds) take her poo from her cage and put it where you want her to go outside so the smell is out there. See, dogs have scent-posts where they smell where they've gone and will go most of the time. Also it is rather odd to hear of a dog going in its cage...usually they have a thing to keep their bed areas clean, so maybe (I know it sounds mean) leave her in her cage with the mess for just a little bit (yeah, you might have to bathe her afterward...)
Best of luck! And I just finished "The Art of Raising A Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete, it's a great read and tells about that kind of thing a lot.
throw it out side DUH!!
She is a puppy and it will take some time and patience. She may be too young to understand what is happening. If you leave her in her kennel during the day, of course she will potty in there and that becomes her comfort zone to do her business. Try taking her out of her kennel more often.
Ew, philbert*, ever heard of crate-training?? Just because it looks like a cage to YOU doesn't mean the dog sees it that way. You really shouldn't comment on things you clearly know nothing about, especially if you're going to be so disparaging!
In addition to the general house-training advice given by more constructive folks, I would consult a trainer, because your dog has already been taught (by someone else) to potty in her crate. You'll also need to restrict where she can go when you go out. Sorry I don't have anything more helpful to suggest.
The best trick to house training a puppy is to buy a very small cage, so she won't want to go in her cage because thats where she sleeps. When you go outside play alot until she gets tired then bring her in the house and put her in her cage, and as much as she whines you need to leave her in her cage. She will fall asleep sometime. Another hint is don't feed or water her after 6pm, because then she won't want to go outside as much in the night. Hope that helps! Make sure to take lots of pictures they grow up fast!
Believe it or not a pup is much like a child. Once your pups finishes a meal take it outside. Preferably your own back yard. Scent marking won't happen for a while so no need to take it for a walk. Taking a dog for a walk is for exercise, not to go on other peoples property even if it is a mailbox. When you take the pup outside it is now your responsibility to become more patient. You don't go to the bathroom right after you eat why do people think that a dog is different. Stay in the yard with your pup for a good while and when it can't wait, it will go. This is when you praise the pup for learning to go outside. Do this for 30 days and it will become a habit. Remember, have patience the pup does want to make you happy it just feels more security in its create. Also you must clean the create regularly to remove the smell of feces from the last time it went.
Good luck
Make sure that there's only enough room in your puppy's cage for her to sleep. Most dogs will not want to sit in their own filth and will therefore wait until they are taken out of the cage to do their business. If the cage is too big for her, she will find an area to pee and then move to the area of the cage that is clean.
After you've made her cage smaller and she stops peeing in the cage, take her outside for 10 minutes. If she doesn't go, return her to her cage for 10 minutes and then take her back outside. Continue this routine until she goes potty outside. I know it sounds like a lot of work - but it worked with my puppy.
May I also suggest teaching her to tell you she has to go outside by attaching a string of bells to the door you take her out. Everytime you take her outside - ring the bell. Then start taking her paw and making her ring the bell. Eventually, she will start ringing the bell to let you know that she has to go out. This has been a HUGE help to me and my dog in the potty training process.
Patience is the key word here. Your puppy is like a baby. Don't leave her in the cage if you are home. She needs to feel like part of the family. Let her do her own thing but with guidance. Put some old newspapers on the floor and place a toy on the papers. When you see her circling and sniffing for a place to pee, put her on the paper. She'll get the idea quick. Meanwhile, get into the habit of taking her outside several times a day to an area you'd prefer she does her business. Habit is the training and if she understands the place in the yard you chose for her necessities, she'll eventually look forward to the outings and your home will be clean.
i just got a puppy recently and he did the same thing the vet told us to make the cage smaller so he only has room to sleep in it b/c they wont "go" were they sleep! and when he is finnally trained you can make it bigger again!
