Answers:
female dogs do have bleeds called coming into season, this is when they can mate and have puppies so you need to have her spayed or keep her in away from male dogs.they cant get pregnant on everyday of their season as much as they can on the 10th and i think its the 14th day but since its not always easy to see when they start its just better to keep them in.contact your local vet they will tell you all the shots you need against parvo, letrosposis, and distemper and any other things needed in your area they also need kennel couch vacc if they go in kennels or near lots of othr dogs(they don't just catch it in kennels!also worming is needed.any good brand of food will do but they do small bites food for the smaller dog.you need toget down to her level when you want her to come to you,you will look like a giant to her and she will be frightened if you just go to quickly at first.let her slowly get to know you.dont carry her round too much even though its tempting when she is so small, they dont like it and some small dogs can be quite snappy cos you are lifting them to a point that tells them they need to protect you.read up on dog care and dog pschology for more info.good luck with your dog
ok.. if you can, find out what brand of food she was eating before you got her.. its best not to switch foods right away if you can avoid it.
If you dont know, then might as well start her off with a good brand, your local petshop should have some decent brands:
merricks
chicken soup for the pet lover's soul
canidae
innova
evo
california natural
avoderm
artemis
pinnacle
eagle pack
wysong
timberwolf organics
wellness
solid gold
natural balance
Drs Foster and Smith
Newman's own
orijen
evolve
fromm

the vet should be able to tell you which shots she needs.. rabies is required by law. She should also have a heartworm test to be sure she does not have heartworm.. you should start her on a monthly preventative right away.. you can get that from your vet. Yes, dogs do have their "menstral periods" its called "in heat" or "in season".. dogs typically have their first heat around 6 months of age, and then come into season every 6 months or so. Spaying will stop this.
You just got her today, give her time to get used to you. Offer her treats and toys, and use kind words to her.
You should have gotten more information before you found your pet. I would take her to your veterinarian and get their advise into a worming and vaccination record. I would feed her a food that is small kibble, not a chunked food. A good quality food is something that has 30-40% protein and 20 % fat for good skin and bones. I like Diamond Performance which has smaller sized kibble and then add water to wet it down.
All female animals have menstrual periods. In humans it is every 28 days in dogs it is 6 months. Since your pup is not purebred, I would check into neutering her after her first season.
Your pet will take awhile to adjust to its new home. I would not chase her. Hold her in your lap and repeat her name over and over. She will start to associate it with good things. If she runs away, do not chase her. Sit very quietly and allow her to approach you first.
Take Care of your new puppy!

Alright, you need to research the dog first off. Get her signed up for puppy obediance school, that will save you a lot of questions later on down the road. I would suggest going with a good quality food. Try wellness, canidae... try googling "natural dog food" and you'll find a lot of good info and where to find them.
Make an appointment at a local vet for a check up. When you're there the vet will ask you a series of simple questions about which shots she's had. The person you got her from should be able to tell you if she's had any. From there the vet will know where to go on that front.
And what you're thinking of as far as "menstral cycle" is her heat. Normally a dog has about 2 a year. They last about 3 weeks each and she will drip a bit of blood during that time. I would highly suggest getting her spayed. This will not only save you the hassle of dealing with stray males wondering around try to pay her a visit but keep her from having puppies that you will have a hard time finding homes for. Plus spaying helps illiminate the chances of certain diseases.
And when you call her, try calling to her with a treat. Once she's over don't lunge for her. Sit calmly and let her come to you. She may take a bit to get used to you but she'll warm up eventually.
i got a chihuahua for christmas this year, and its been a long couple of months.
you can pretty much do any type of bagged dog food ( i wouldnt do canned, it makes them get diareha real bad), but make sure its puppy bites or whatever, because theyre easier to eat.
also, we trained bruce (my puppy) on puppy/cat pee pads. you can buy them by the 100s for like 30 bucks, and they are just these pads you can lay down in the house for them to use. i found this to be alot easier then takinghim outside all the time when i first got him. ive had him for a few months now, so were startin to train him outside now. seems to be going well. if you go to the vets, theyll know what kind of shots the pup will need : ) annnnd, last but not least - i wouldnt give them people food. after you do it once, they will always annoyingly beg and it ends up ruining their teeth ( $$$ to get them pulled)... Bruce was scared for the first week or two that we got him, but he soon realized we were good people and now he loves us more than life. Just move slow and carefully around the pup so they get more comforitable : ) and yes - female dogs have periods. they do have dorky diapers they can wear, cause theyll make a mess. but if you get her fixed,, she wont have "periods"
Well, first, you should have been asking these questions before you got the dog. She needs a good quality puppy food, some brands have food specifically for small breeds.
Puppies need a series of 3 shots, which at her age she should already have had. But if not, ask your vet what is best for her, parvo, distemper is a must, but some small breeds can't have lepto. Also she needs rabies when she's 4 months.
As far as the running , if a gorilla approached you, wouldn't you run? which is what you must seem to her. She obviously
hasn't been properly socialized, which isn't a surprise if she also hasn't had any shots or health care. Keep her in a small area where you can talk quietly to her, hold off on the discipline till she's comfortable with you, don't rush her and be patient. Menstrual periods no. Heat cycles yes. Kind of the opposite. Where we can't normally get pregnant during our cycles, this is the only time a dog can. They usually come in heat 2 times a year, it lasts around 3 weeks, and they'll kill to get to a male. Get her spayed, go to the library and read up on her breed(s) and dog care in general
Whoever you got her from should be able to give you the:
Name of the food she's been eating.
What shots she's had.
If she's been on heartworm preventative.
If she's been on flea control.
If she's been wormed.
The best thing you can do is get her to a vet %26 if you can't get this information, get her started on her shots, dewormed, heartworm checked %26 ask what type of food they suggest. But any good puppy kibble that has mostly meats/chicken %26 veggies in the smaller bites will work for her. You may need to soften it a little with some water or broth. And get her set up for spaying. She can go into heat anytime after September so you have a little time.
As for her behavior, just give her a little time. She's in a new home with new people %26 she'll need to adjust to these changes. Try leaving a leash on her when you're trying to get her to come. And have some really tasty treats to tempt her. Good luck with your new addition. Just don't panic %26 take it a day at a time. She'll warm up to her new family pretty quickly.
As for food, she should be on a good quality puppy food until she is around a year old. I feed my pups Purina Puppy Little Bites. Don't give her adult food until then because their isn't enough fat and protein in it for a small puppy. Don't start giving her human food either. Her system is very sensitive at this age and she could get sick or stop eating her puppy food.
She will need a series of 3 sets of shots spaced out over a few months. The vet will be able to explain which ones. When she is six months old she will need a rabies shot as well. Keep her inside except to potty and away from other peoples dogs or strays until she has her shots since she can get sick before that. She will also need to be wormed by the vet. They will want you to bring in a small sample of her poop so they can check to see if she has worms.
Female dogs do have a period, not as frequently as humans do though. I would recommend getting her spayed. She is old enough already and it is much healthier for her and can help prevent her from getting mammary or ovarian cancer.
She runs from you because she is frightened. She probably hsn't been socialized that much and i will take her a little while to warm up to you. Sit on the floor and talk to her calmly. Try just sitting there and watching tv. She will probably come over to investigate. Just let her sniff you and don't acknowledge her at first. Move slowly and see if she will let you pet her. She sounds like she migh've been abused. Just go slowly with her. Don't chase her or try to catch her. You can start by putting on a good fitting collar and leash and taking her for walks around your yard. Just keep her away from the strange dogs who may not be vaccinated and could give her something.
Threre are many sites online that offer great advice for owning a puppy. Is she your first dog? Where did you get her from? Pleaseread up on caring for a puppy and get her to a vet asap so she doesn't get sick before getting her shots.
Your vet can be a great source of good information for you and your new furkid.
