I need dog training tips. I'm getting a grown dog. He lived inside but will live outside in a house.?
How can I train him to get used to me and what I want him to do? Like not running away or in the street, coming when I call, etc.
Answers:
well as for running to the street keep him on a leash at all times or inside when ur away.Or if ur yard is fenced in pretty high then let him loose as long as there is no way out then he should be fine. And as for making him come when called...get some treets and make him sit somewhere and back away slowely and then put the treet down on the ground and say "Come" and if he comes before u say "come" then pick up the treet before he gets it and say "no" and make him go back and if he comes then let him have the treet. And then everytime he gets it right back away more and more each time.Everything is with rewards and patience with a dog.Give him a chance...it will take some time for him to perfect the things u teach him. :] good luck and just have fun with him! i'm sure you'll be best friends!
I cannot tell where you live but in most urban areas of the United States it is illegal to have a dog running loose. So, if you live in the US and your dog can run into the street, that's not going to work.
Also, changing an outdoor dog to an indoor dog is pretty easy, changing an indoor dog to an outdoor dog is usually kind of difficult. Depending on the dog, most dogs enjoy being close to their "pack" - which means YOU. Moving them outdoors could be very hard on the dog. I have had many dogs who loved spending all day outdoors, however, I bring them into a small room of the house at night. They love it.
Good luck.
You are going to adopt a dog that has lived indoors in a house and with his people all his life and you want to make it an outdoor dog? And your concern is how to keep it from running away? LOL
Reconsider or don't adopt the dog.
There are professional trainers. A professional trainer maybe able to help you with what you should expect when you have a dog.
Some people have no dog sense at all. Some folks should just not have dogs. That is OK as long as you recognize you are not really a dog person.

Don't get the dog. I don't know who in their right mind would give you their inside dog knowing that your going to make it live outside.
Dogs are social creatures and want to be with their people. They should be part of your family not stuck outside. I feel so sorry for your dog.

I need dog breed advice?
Considering a dog.
My girl should be large, shorthaired, be content with a small yard and a walk a day, sometimes two. I need a protector, but even if the breed isnt known for that her size would be enough of a deterrant. She should love to wrestle and be loving as well as receptive to lost of hugs and kisses.
Also I need a 10 year or better lifespan.
No pitt bulls. I dont want to hear it, I dont want a pit.
Answers:
you should try getting a labrador or a german shepherd. ask a few owners for their advice if its suitable for someone like you.
get a german shepherd.
i would suggest a boxer
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/boxer.htm...
Try a Bull-Terrier (target dog)
if you want something energetic go for a Mcnab. Beautiful dogs that are fun and love to play.
SHELTER MUTT!
They make the best pets.
They're temperment tested, inexpensive and come with lots of "extras".
The shelter attendants spend lots of time with the animals, they can show you the perfect pet for you.
Lab? German Shepherd? I want a German Shep. Those dogs are beautiful.
Unfortunately here are some things you need to know:
-large breed dogs need space and LOTS of exercise
-in fact, all dogs need multiple walks a day.
-large breed dogs do not live that long because of their large size. it puts more wear and tear on their joints. they are also prone to diseases like bloat.
-wrestling with dogs is a bad idea. how do the know who it is ok to wrestle with and who it is not? surely you would not want your dog to try to wrestle with elderly people or children. it is better not to start this bad habit.
That being said, your best bet might be to go to your local shelter and explain to them your lifestyle, needs and what you want from a pet dog. They would be better able to match you up with a dog that suits you.
We have a German Shepherd. She is loving, great with children and neighbors, easy to train, incredibly intelligent, protective, and loyal. She lived in a town home for her first two years of life and has never had problem with only getting a moderate amount of exercise in a given day. The only thing I would caution about the breed is that they are a bit prone to separation anxiety. Also, they need to be socialized (as any dog does, really) a lot as pups. Certainly, though the breed fits most of your criteria.
Geryhound. They love a good long walk or short run, and like to play out doors. Indoors they are a big couch potato and thrive on being part of the family.
They are not so good at being a gurad dog, but their size may scare people.
They are short haired and live 12-14 years.
Try http://www.petfinder.com
There are lots of rescues out there with greyhounds needing homes.
Germen shepherds come in short hair.
if anything go to the shelter and pick out a large size pure black dog. they are the most intimadting of dogs to really get. almost every one is afraid of a large black dog. But who knows. why not pittbulls?
I have owned a rottweiler and they are loyal, love their owner, very protective of their owner and family. They are a lazy dog so they don't need much exercise. Just a walk will do. In fact they love to just lie in the sun or curl up next to the fire. They love the wrestle, tug-of-war games and mine love to be cuddled. The only problem is that of their lifespan 8 to10 years. But they will love you back. I still miss mine. I now own a Rhodesian Ridgback X and she is lovely. Same temperament as my rotty. I hope this helps.
GREYHOUND!!
get a greyhound are awesome
Erm, I can't think of a single large breed that would be okay with a small yard and one walk unless it's a very long walk. One way to help with that would be to put a weighted back pack on her while she walks. The wrestling should also help. Most large breeds are high energy, so just keep that in mind.
When you say large, do you mean Lab sized or Great Dane? I'm assuming Lab, so my answer is based upon that. Great Dane sized would probably be too much for your small yard. Also shorthaired is open for ambiguity, because both Labs and Greyhounds are considered to have short hair, but the length varies greatly. I'm going to assume that you mean shorter than say a Collie.
I have found herding dogs to be by far the greatest guard dogs, even the smaller breeds. They were bred to protect and tend to their flocks. This means that they will protect your house and family. They tend to be some of the smarter breeds as well, because the job of keeping up with a flock of sheep requires much more cognitive ability than retrieving a dead duck. They tend to know the difference between friends and foes, and usually aren't aggressive unless they think they need to be. Most are more likely to stay between a stranger and their owner while intently watching than they are to lunge at the stranger. Most herding dogs tend to have longer hair though, which is also because most were bred to live in cooler regions, and also the thicker fur helps protect them from stray kicks from the livestock and bites from would be predators.
Some of the most gorgeous short haired, large dogs belong to the sporting class, but most make terrible guard dogs. They're friendly to most everyone, and a large dog wagging it's tail isn't going to deter anyone. So stay away from Labs and other retrievers and other bird dogs. However, if you decide to go this route, a Weimereiner is probably your best bet. Gorgeous dogs that aren't quite as sweetly stupid as Retrievers (no hate mail, I'm the proud owner of a sweetly stupid Flat-Coated Retriever).
Hounds are a good route to take. While many hound breeds have the "lovable to everyone" of many breeds in the sporting class, they are noisey. You and everyone in your neighborhood would be woken up if someone tried breaking into your house in the night. Hounds can also be more protective and show a bit more aggression than sporting class dogs, so it's more likely that you'd find a good guard dog that isn't just an alarm. The Hound Class probably has the best variety of large, short haired dogs. I'd suggest a Rhodesian Ridgeback for you, however they have an incredible amount of energy, so to be managable, she'd need lots of excercise. They were bred to hunt lions, so even on looks alone, one could make a burgler wet himself. My second suggestion in the Hound group would be a Black and Tan Coonhound. While Irish Wolfhounds are very large, they are incredibly docile and tend to make terrible guards, also their hair is probably longer than you'd like.
I'll discourage you from the sporting class because I believe that most of these breeds would be far too large for a small yard. They require a lot of time and work to be managable, most beyond regular excercise. They tend to be more aggressive breeds and I don't believe that aggressive dogs make the best guard dogs unless you're a drug lord or other crime boss.
Don't dismiss the Terrier class because most Terriers are so small. There are a few larger Terrier breeds, even a few with short coats. I know you don't want a Pit Bull, and I'm not suggesting one, but as a point of reference, Pits belong in the Terrier class. If you decide to research Terriers, I'll save you some time. Staffordshire Terriers in both of their variaties are pretty much Pit Bulls. Bull Terriers are different from Pit Bulls, so don't disqualify them for the "Bull" in their name. They'd probably be your best bet in the Terrier class, but you might also consider Airedales or Irish Terriers, but their short coats require seasonal care.
I know you want a large dog, but you might want to consider a Bulldog. They are stocky and heavy, ugly enough to be mean looking, and don't require quite as much excercise. Same goes for Basset Hounds, except the ugly intimidation. Both breeds are bigger than they look.
My last slightly unwarranted suggestion would be to a smaller hound, like a Beagle. They're sweet, but very noisey dogs, perfect alarms. They also aren't annoyingly small and will not make their owner seem girly.
For more information about any of these breeds and the classes I've discussed, go to www.akc.org and look under breeds. If you look at Breeds by Class, you can see the full listing of the classes I've talked about so much.
German shepherd is by far the most devoted, most protective of its herd of sheep (the family) of anything walking on four legs. I have two now, have had as many as four at a time. Mine live indoors and are spoiled rotten. Royal Canine makes a good premium food especially for German Shepherds and the key is spent the extra bucks on one from high bloodlines and either from Germany where they take the breeding extremely serious or from parents with first line direct German decent. I have a breeder I buy from and have already got two so the best Shepherds I ever owned from her. I have intentions of getting a third one from a litter due in September. I prefer females now over the males as the males are more prone to wander thus harder to confine to the yard. I fixed female is perfect in every way and more adoring to its master then the male. I spoke to my breeder just today she is 80% sure Lily is pregnant. You can email her at VomFelsenHof@aol.com Her name is Melanie, tell her Richard referred you and she will line you up with a dog that will amaze you in every way.

I need chihuahua help?
im planing on getting a chihuahua. but the thing is i have school and i would have to leave him alone for 8 hours. im wondering if i can leave him alone for that long and not have him stessed or have emotional problems.. :/
Answers:
Depends on the age...a Chihuahua will need to go out to pee, etc, and be played with more often than that if it's young. But 8 months old and up, then yes, but try to not too often, and take him outside to pee right before you go and RIGHT when you get in. Make sure if he is alone for 8 hours in a row that you keep them out of there for the rest of the day, otherwise it's too much confidment. And don't forget to leave him adequate food, water, and some TOYS in there with him!!
Why get a pet if you are having to leave it alone for 8 hours? I suppose you will put it in a crate and leave it all day to cry it's little eyes out.
they can be left alone but if your worried you may consider getting him a friend :]
crate training is wonderful for this. You will have to start up slow for a puppy. I would read up on the subject if I were you.
My Chi is ok left alone all day. I make sure he goes out right before I leave, and take him out right after I get home. I leave a radio on low for him all day, and leave him in the kitchen with lots of toys to play with. He seems fine, no problems that I can see.
Not a young puppy.. That's far too long to leave a puppy alone.
An adult dog can be left alone that long, but not a puppy. You need to get someone to let him out during the day, or you're going to have a real hard time housebreaking him. You can't crate a puppy that long without a break. You'll have to keep him in a kitchen or laundry room with a puppy gate across the opening, and lots of newspapers or pee pads. Do your best to crate train and house break him when you are home.
As far as stress, my dogs sleep all day whether I'm home or not unless I specifically do something with them. When I'm gone I leave the radio playing soft music or the t.v. on.
I got a chihuahua during school to and i just kept him in the utility room and put puppy pads down. My mom or dad would take him out at noon and then when i got home i took him out. And as for the temperment they learn to ajust to your life style and will get ues to you going to school every morning and will jsut exspect it. So dont worry about that. Just be worried about the house training. Hope this helped.
Having a pet/friend is a wonderful thing. But it sounds like you are a very busy person. Gone at least 8 hours a day. Do you think it would be fair to your new friend to be left alone all day. Not to mention - when and where is he suppose to use the washroom. To me owning a pet is as much a responsibility and committment as haveing a child. I believe now may not be a good time for a dog. Have you considered a kitten. They are usually more independent and use a litter box and give just as much love.PLEASE Think About It Carefully before you make your decision.
It is very sad when someone gets a pet to later get rid of it - considerTHAT stress on a pet - feeling unwanted just when he thought he was at home and loved.
If the dog you purchase is an older dog(around 1 or 2) it should be fine but if you get a puppy that is too long. They need food and water every 4 hours. It is also hard if you are trying to potty train them. If you leave them alone in the house and they are not potty trained then they go potty everywhere.
If you are going to leave him alone for 8 hours you are going to have a LOT of trouble housebreaking him when you are out of school. He needs a break and some play time in between if you get a puppy. An older dog can hold it longer, but still needs to be taught where to go to the potty. Do you have anyone that can help let him out 1/2 way thru the day? Take him out for a little walk and let him pee and play? I only say this because I have a Chihuahua and I would NEVER crate him for longer than 3 hours at a time. Small dogs need to be taken out a lot and especially when they are puppies so that they get the right idea and don't start going in your house, or you will have a mess on your floor.

I Need Behavior and Nutrion Advice For My Puppy!?
Hi! My name is Milda (Lithuanian name) and I have a 6 month old Pomeranian puppy. I have two questions about him. 1. How do I get him to stop barking when the doorbell rings and stop jumping on the guests when they enter? They are really getting scared of coming over at all. 2. What is the best food to give my Pomeranian puppy? I heard dog food like Science Diet, Pedigree, Purina, Iams and others are really unhealthy for my dog because they are full of preservatives, by products and other things my dog doesn鈥檛 need. Even though my vet recommended all of these dog food brands, the workers at Petco told me those brands or dog food is the worst choice for my puppy. Instead they recommended foods with no preservatives or by products but with ingredients like we by for ourselves such as lamb, chicken, fruit. She said the best choices were Solid Gold Puppy Food, Blue Holistic Dog Puppy Food or any others with real food ingredients. Are these really the best choices for my dog or do I just listen to my vet? What would you recommend? I am looking forward to your answer. I want my puppy to live a long happy NUTRIOUS life. And I know you would want that for your dog so please help me and give me some advice!

Your puppy needs to go to doggie training school. You can check your local PetSmart or PetCo for puppy training classes or AKC has referrals for your local animal club for dog training courses.
The best dog food is to make your own dog food and mix it with their dry kibble food. Because animals just like humans also need a variety of vegetables, fruits and meats for their body. You need to stick with the brand name of dog food that the breeder fed him. Then if you want change to a different brand name of dog food, then you do it gradually.
You need to continue feeding your new puppy the same brand name dog food. It's not good to change dog foods ever. If you want to change the dog food to another brand name, then you need to do it gradually.
When buying dry kibble food, make sure the first ingredient is either chicken, beef or turkey and avoid meat-by-products on the ingredient label. Here are some healthy dry kibble dog food brand names that I recommend:
1. Castor %26 Pollux Natural Ultramix Puppy Formula
2. Castor %26 Pollux Organix Puppy Formula
3. Nutro Natural Choice Puppy Chicken Meal, Rice and Oatmeal Formula
4. Hill's Science Diet Canine Growth -- ask for prescription version from vet's office
5. Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy Formula
If he is a picky eater, then try making him some homemade dog food: which can be 1 source of vegetable (carrots, peas, corn, broccoli, potato, sweet potato, cabbage) and 1 source of protein (boneless chicken breast, eggs). The vegetables should be steamed to preserve the nutrients. The chicken and eggs should be boiled. The homemade food must be served cold. I feed my dog some bananas as treats or part of their meal. It is a lot of work making your own homemade dog food, but it is worth it in the long run, so they will live longer. Here are some websites to avoid feeding your dog:
1. Foods Which Are Dangerous for Dogs:

2. Foods You Should Not Feed Your Dog:

I recommend feeding dogs with organic or holistic foods because it has no preservatives compared to the big brand names.
Don't listen to your vet when it comes to dog food.. Rarely do they suggest people feed a quality food.. I think they prefer people to feed poison food so that they end up with sick pets, or pets with chronic problems.. It is to the vets benefit that your dog eat bad food.. Listen to the girl at the petfood store, or do some research on dog foods and choose one without cancer causing preservatives, dyes and sugars, wheat, corn, fillers etc.
Solid Gold is an excellent food so is Wellness. I'd check both of these out.
As far as the jumping thing goes you have to train your pup not to do this. I suggest some obedience training for him. He's not to young and it's fun too.
Good luck with your pup!
For food I would suggest canidae or innova. They're both good foods but the others the petstore suggested are fine too. The other foods aren't horrible but they are definately not as good as the others you'd find at a pet store. The only thing I would be careful of with Solid Gold is the protien content. Protien is good for your dog but if the dog isn't active and using all the fuel the protien gives him he'll just start to gain weight.
As for the jumping, every time he jumps cross your arms in a defensive manner and turn your back to the dog with a firm "no". It'll tell your dog the jumping isn't appreciated, just be consistant, telling it no sometimes then letting it jump all over you another will just confuse the poor thing.
The barking, just try saying "no" and having the dog sit. When the dog sits and ignores the bell or knock give him a treat as a reward. Barking equals a "no" and no reward.
Plus obediance training is always a good idea.
Hello Milda. We have a Pomeranian that is just over a year old and he still has yet to stop barking when there is a knock at the door or he sees someone walking by on the sidewalk. This is a complaint that I have heard from a lot of Pomeranian owners. I think the best solution is just when the doorbell rings pick him up and he won't jump on them. I know this because it is what we do. As for food...don't listen to the vet. they will tell you to get the food from their office so that it will be more expensive. If you want to go with the natural stuff there is always Benetful...we give our dog Purina One and he does just fine.Poms are really apt to getting diabetes as well so be sure to always keep his dish full so he can eat when he wants and he will stay healthy. that is what the breeder told us to do...I hope that this helps you...

I need another advice please!?
Okay,
My previous question was asking gow to housebreak a dog.
Many people told me to use the crate method.i have no idea how to do that! and also, one person told me to keep her in a crate till i got home. Well, I still go to school and thats 7 hours a day...i dnt feel right to leave her in a crate for 7 hours a day...what should I do??
Answers:
You have 2 options.crate her for 7 hours, or let her roam the house for 7 hours. First of all, they'd really rather be in a crate confined to one area, than to hve the 'run of the house' cause having all of that freedom and room can actually make a dog pretty nervous.
When you put her in the kennel before school, make sure the last 2 things you do before you walk out the door is get her to go potty, and put her in her crate. Don't talk to her in a squeaky voice, like 'I'm sorry I have to be gone for so long, but I'll hurry home!' That makes them nervous too!
Just be matter of fact sounding about it when you tell her goodbye. You may have to practice that before you try it on her for real! BUT.here's the thing. She needs a couple of toys she LIKES in with her.
First make sure the crate has a blanket in it so she's comfy. Also, if you've noticed her with a 'special' toy, put that in with her. Then...this will be her favorite.get a KONG. Do you know what that is?? If not, go to the doggy toy aisle at Walmart, or whereever. You will see a Kong. It's made of super hard rubber, so they can chew on it forever and not do much damage to it! You'll see it has a little hole on one end and a big hole on the other end. In that big hole, put a couple of treats in it for her, but ones that are big enough they won't fall out. Kind of shove themdown in there, and when you leave, she'll be busy playing with the kong trying to get the treats out! If she doesn't respond to it at first, put a bit of peanut butter inside of it so her tongue can get it, and she'll get the hang of it! Good luck!
just lock her in a crate for 5 minutes at a time and when she doesnt whine praise her. then when you feed her and water her after 5-10 mintutes take her outside to do her buisness one she does it praise her again and let her playaround for 20-30 mins then put her back in the crate for a while.

I need an emergency pet hospital near Vallejo who accepts payments?
I can't afford much right now, and my dog is really sick. I need an emergency hospital that's open 24 hours and that's willing to work with payments. Please respond quickly.
Answers:
most ER vet clinics do not accept payments. my suggestion to you would be to call the local ER vets and see what kind of payment arrangements can be made. or borrow from someone or put it on a credit card. unfortunatly thanks to not many paying their vets bills there aren't many vets that will take payments period, and definatly not from an established client. but it sounds like your dog needs vet care now, you can call your vet and see if they have afterhour services, they might be more willing to work with you, if you have a been a long term and good paying client. good luck.

you could try this site.I never used it but supposedly they will help get your pet stable and you have so much time to pay them back.
check in your area for dog shelters some are willing to care for sick animals for free or reasonable rates
What is wrong with your dog? What are the symptoms?
See if Credit Care is for you. no or low interest, find out online in minutes.

Hi, I would wait until you get the little chi baby home and watch her to see what name seems to suit her, also try calling her by different ones and see which she responds to.
ALSO please go out now and get Nutrical to have on hand... small Chis need to be fed every 3 to 4 hours to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) it is fatal if not treated immediately! (Symptoms are fatigue, acting lethargic, not eating, stumbling while trying to walk.) May I also suggest getting Chihuahuas for Dummies and reading it through before you get her!

I need advice on travelling alone, by minivan, with two dogs--from NY to ME.?
I'm trying to salvage a last week of vacation before I go back to work. I am staying at our summer place once we get to Maine; I'd really like to have the dogs with me, but only if we can travel safely without risk to their health from the summer's heat.
My concern is how to safely make quick pit stops so I can go to the bathroom (trip is 525 miles, can't exactly hold it!) without
jeopardizing the health of my dogs (summer heat isn't over yet, in fact, there are advisories for today.)
Should I wait until evening, and travel at night? (This is my instinct--either this or I board them with the vet, but I really want them with me.)
Is it ok to leave them in the car with the a/c running for 5 minutes? Or tie them (obviously away from traffic) outside the minivan briefly? Has anyone ever brought their dog(s) on leash into a highway rest area bathroom? (And how quickly did you get kicked out?) I bring plenty of water--and a cooler full of ice. Thanks!
Answers:
I do a lot of traveling with my dogs here in the south where it is a lot hotter. I travel late at night when they are bed down in the back, it is cooler out and I don't feel so bad leaving them in the car for about 5 minutes after the a/c has been on for a long time. The car does not heat up quick like it does in the summer sun. As a matter of fact, my black car still feels cool after I go to the bathroom, get the dogs out and walk them for a few minutes. Maybe parked for 20 minutes and it is still cool in there.
Your instincts are good. If you are a night owl, travel at night. If you are a morning person, leave at like 5am when it is still cool out. You should be able to get to your destination before the hottest part of the day.
Unfortunately, you may not take dogs into public restrooms at rest areas. I would also advise against tieing them out. People are sometimes mean to animals or steal animals or if another animal comes up, you are not there to controle your dogs.
Also, do not give your dogs ice. Especially to cool down. They do not cool like we do, and so it can cause the stomache to cramp and start bloat. "room temp" water is best for a thirsty dog. If one of your dogs starts to over heat, take a cool damp towl and put it on the inner thigh. offer tappid water and turn up the a/c.
Best of luck... and no matter how much they beg, you be the one to do the driving.
I travel from SE MASS to northern ME about 3X's/year with my black lab, the 3 rest stops I stop at are very dog friendly, I would leave him in the car with the a/c running, bring a spare car key so I could lock up, most rest areas have dog areas to walk, water, let them do their thing, The dogs and you should be fine!!
Enjoy your trip.Go ahead and travel with them . my uncle of 82 years old went from Miami to San Antonio in only 2 days with 2 dogs and a bird, He stay at a motel with the pets one night , he park with the ac on for only 3 o 4 minutes and took water and food for himself and the dogs and no problem .Enjoy your trip.
The best thing you can do is leave about 3 a.m. Have everything packed the night before so all you need to do is toilet the dogs and yourself and get in the van. Do not slurp away on coffee, water, or soda. Just sips if necessary. That should eliminate at least 2 of the bathroom stops. You will be traveling in the cooler part of the day. Also, if you are driving along an interstate, there is always a place for you to toilet the dogs. However, I would feel much better if you would just stop along a side road somewhere. Sometimes those rest stops have undesirable people lurking around. Also, you cannot bring the dog into the restroom. Why not bring a friend along and your problem is solved. Wouldn't you like to enjoy your vacation with a friend anyway?
well when i went to a restroom i saw 5 dogs in there and the workers were petting him. there not a loud in the bathroom so if you have a husband or someone your going with to hold the dog while you go to the bathroom and then you hold it while he/she goes. when you are driving keep the air on high so they dont get ho i sujest you take them out every 3 hours. when you stop at a rest stop let them poop and have waer and food.
One thing I would make sure that you do when traveling with your dogs it to take along another set of keys to your van. Leave the van on with the ac running but, please set the emergency brake! You hear horror stories where vans are left running and someone bumps the gearshift.
Try to stop places that other dog owners may not stop, when I travel with my dogs I always worry about what my dogs can pick up in "pet only areas". Like parvo, fleas, etc. Just take along a method of cleaning up after your dogs and normally no one says anything.
Good luck and safe trip.

I need advice on how to housetrain a puppy, anyone?
I have a 2 month old puppy, she is mildly paper trained. I usually have her either in my room, or in the back yard. In my room i put some news papers on the floor, and she has peed there sometimes, mostly outside though. The thing with the newspapers is, she's starting to chew on them, and when she's playing and running she moves them out of place, so they won't serve their purpose anymore... I'm thinking of getting rid of them altogether. But i don't know how i'm suppposed to handle this if accidents happen in the house.
I have been praising her with treats everytime i see her peeing outside, but as soon as i tell her 'good girl' while she's peeing, she looks at me and appears to cut the pee short to come running to get her treat. Should i wait to praise until she's done? will she get that it's because she peed outside?
I've read some tips on this, but i need someone to explain this to me based on the info i give here... please, thanks!

HI, This is the number one question Dog Owners always ask me. How to Housebreak their dogs.
You have to understand the basics. What goes in must come out and you have to know when that is. You have to put your pet on a schedule.
Sit down and make a list of times your going to feed and water them. Make sure you give enough time for them to consumpe both.
An example would be when you get up in the morning take them out then bring them in and feed, water. leave it down for about 30 minutes. Then take them out agian. If their puppies your going to have to do this several times aday. But do this atleast 3 times aday and give a little water in between the feeding. That's right, you have to pick the water up too.
You don't have to leave water down all the time if their in a controlled eviroment like a house. Outside is different. But once the food and wtaer is down for 30 miutes, pick both up.
Write down the times your going to do this, plus the times you take them out. Stick with it. If they have anaccident in the house. DON"T yell at them, just writhe down the time and see if there's a trend of going that time of a several day period. If there is, adjust the schedule to make sure they go out at that time.
Some Dogs are very hard to housebreak, but with a schedule, atleast they will know when their going to be feed and taken out.
If your going out, crate them and then when you return just continue on with the schedule. If you have any other questions. Feel free to email me.
Best wishes

yes i have been told by my vet as soon as they have finished peeing where you want them to pee, to prise them and give them a treat. The vet also said sometimes you can just give lots of praise instead of a treat.
I have 2 chihuahuas. It took a lot of patience and lots of praise and treats. Good luck!
paper training is not a good thing we learned the hard way when we got our first 2 puppies... u have to bring it out side like every hour i no it seems like a lot but u will be happy in the long run.. trust me.. we have 4 inside dogs now all trained to go outside and its awesome..
I have trained 5 puppies in my lifetime..you need to get her on a schedule...after each meal within 10 mins or so...you must have her follow you to the same exit each time..and to the same area outside...let her do her business..then bring her in right away...she will learn that after eating she must go outside...upon waking from sleep do the same thing...as time goes by ...watch her after eating she should go to the exit on her own..let her out right away...you will see reactions from her when she feels she needs to go out...such as going in circles near the exit or looking at the exit..you can place paper near the exit but you want to eventually eliminate that all together or she will get lazy and just go on paper..it will take some patience but should work within a couple of weeks of doing these things..hope this helps..

I need advice on how to help my friend??
My best friend (my ex-boyfriend, just giving u history),is going to have to put his dog down on monday. His dog has cancer and they dont have the money to operate on it and she is 12 years old so it would be kinda a waste if shell only live another couple years.Hes so upset about it becuase he raised her and she is his little shadow.Ive already told him its better this way because she is really sick , her stomach is so bloated and she is having a hard time breathing and moving. What can i do to help him ?What can i do to make him not so upset?
Thanks for the help.

Give him this, along with the knowledge that she's given him 12 years of love, laughter, comfort and sweetness. It's time for him to return that love one last time. If she's in that much pain then he has to do what is best for her. So Dear, type in "The Rainbow Bridge" and allow him to cry.
Let him know that he can ask the vet to be there, holding her, as she takes her last breath. That will help him and her cope with what they're both going through. Just be there for him and let him know he's doing all he can for her... one last time.
The Rainbow Bridge:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

I've been through the same thing and honestly theres nothing you can say to make him feel better. You just need to be there for him. It's a very painful thing having to put pets down. No matter how sick they are you always second guess yourself afterwards. If you're close to your pet its like losing a family member. So treat the situation like you would with a person. Maybe go with him when he goes to the vet. Let him know that you're there for him. And then spend lots of time with him. Maybe reminiscing, maybe distracting. Either way, just be there.
Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot you can do. It's a part of the grieving process. He needs to come to terms with this on his own. I know that loosing a dog to cancer is hard, I've lost two that way and it was inopperable cancer just to make it that much harder.
The best you can do is remind him of the 12 wonderful years he had with her and that she wouldn't want him to be sad. It's going to be hard, it always is. Just be there as a shoulder to cry on. Offer to go with him to offer support when the day arrives. Good luck.
apart from what others have already said theres not much anyone else can say except how would he feel about a new puppy? believe it or not it may very well help. it will give him something to focus all the love he felt for his other dog on. and make him laugh and not be lonely while missing his old little friend. some ppl arent willing to go straight to another pet so soon but it really can help.

just tell him that it it is her time to go. God wanted it this way and it would be wrong to let her suffer. She has lived a good long life and now she wants to go to the big fire hydrant in the sky. Tell that she loved him and she wants him to be happy. And to be happy he may want to get a new pet a little bit after his dog gets put down. good luck.

I feel sorry for your friend %26 I know exactly how he feels. Losing our beloved pets are just like losing a two legged family member, and at times even worse. I will post a couple links that may help you providing comfort to your friend. First you can print off this poem %26 give it to him. I have had it hanging on my refridgerator for the past 4 years now when I lost my boy to cancer http://rainbowsbridge.com/poem.htm... Here is the othe site http://www.ygrr.org/doginfo/death-coping...
all you can do is just be there for him in his time of need, and tell him that it's gods will to take the dog to puppy heaven, that he will miss his dog.but there is nothing that will keep him from being so upset.he will be sad for a little while, but he will get over it eventually!p.s. try getting him a new dog that always help's,i know he'll tell you that "no other dog can replace my dog!"thats not true!just try these things!theyre guarenteed 2 work! best of luck 2 u and ur friend!
There is nothing you can do now. Just tell him it is the best for the dog. Afterward, talk about the dog, bring back all the happy memories he had with the dog.
We been through the same situation before. We have a new puppy now. We still thinking about our old dog, but the new puppy also bring us laugh.
Thanks for the help.

I need advice on dealing with the very sudden death of our beloved very healthy 4 yr old PUG?
My beloved dog (Pug) of 4 yrs died suddennly in a kennel last night and the owner of the kennel has yet to offer any sympathy condolences. etc. Our very healthy dog was in a very well equiped air conditioned Kennel and is seems our beloved Lizzie died of heatstroke.what would you do in this matter ?
Answers:
I would not believe the kennel operator who told me she kept the dog in an air conditioned kennel. I would call the BBB, humane society, and anyone else who would take a complaint about it. I would never leave a dog at a kennel.
I would sue if they were at fault which seems to be the case sorry for your loss
Dog food from China?
Have an autopsy done, take the kennel to small claims court and get another pug
Oh dear. I lost my 10 year old pug two years ago. I am so sorry. But what I would do is sue the pants of that kennel! Take it to the courts! Try to shut the Kennel down! Can you imagine if this happened to someone else too? It'd be horrible.
Again, I am so sorry for your loss.
I miss my dog very much and I'm sure you miss yours too.
Contact the local animal control and find out if there have been similar instances, they are the ones who have to dispose of the remains, usually...
Then read your contract, it may say that death is not their responsibility due to their neglect or otherwise, you signed it, that may hurt you. Then I would call my vet and ask them who to talk to legally, I am sure they can refer you to an animal rights type lawyer.
By the way, I am sorry Lizzie died in such a way. I thought by your post you would say she was hit by a car or something bit her, like a snake. It ticks me off that it was due to negligence.
i would see if theres any way you could sue (though im sure they probably had you sign something to get themself of being liable for this type of thing) thats so tragic! i know I would be absolutely crushed if my toby died (year and a half old schnauzer) im so sorry for your family's loss!
Good grief! If this kennel really were well-equipped and air-conditioned, your Lizzie should not have had heat stroke!
I agree, this kennel owner should be sued. There's something very fishy about the whole scenario.
Pugs are very vulnerable to heatstroke.
My guess is that Lizzie was not in the air conditioned kennel you paid for...she was outside in a run or her kennel was given to another dog.
The fact that the kennel owner has not expressed any sympathy to you is very suspicious. It sounds like he's trying to avoid a discussion.
I think you should consult a lawyer.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. You can sue the kennel for the market value of your dog, any vet bills incurred, and if she was intact and to be used for breeding, you can sue for the "lost market value" of any potential offspring she might have produced. The courts don't recognize things like pain and suffering when it comes to pets.
Other than that, you don't have a lot of recourse. You can report them to your local SPCA, animal control, and the BBB.
Generally, the initial paperwork when you check into any boarding facility includes a "Hold Harmless" agreement, where you agree not to hold them responsible for accidents, etc.
While accidents do happen, any good boarding facility is going to at least pay any vet bills and give a sincere apology. If they haven't, well...
I would get the pup autopsied and the SUEEEEEEEE. Poor puppy///t

I need a pooper scooper in the Houston Kingwood Atascocita Texas area.?
Is this pooper scooper business thing even for real? I need someone to do this as I am sick of the task, it's the bad part of owning a cool dog! I live in Kingwood Texas. Amy

I pay less than 10 dollars a week and they come out and remove all the dog poop from my lawn- how cool. I also hated this job and we always fought over who did it. Check out the website or call Alan at 281-570-6576. George
Go to the pet store and buy one. Or use a plastic bag stick your hand in it and pick it up.
I didn't know they did this.I usually just bring a grocery bag or two and pick it up right after. But I also live in the city and kinda have to by law. Good to know though, if I ever get a place with a yard!
How hard is it to pick up poop.. You buy a scooper, you go out 2 ce a day and you pick up poop..
What? A scooper service? That's just dumb, why not clean it up yourself, that's part of being a dog owner!

I need a littler help here?
I have a yorkie who will not lisen. She hates dogs and will not bite them but growl and snarl, she pulls on the leash and is a pain I love her so much tho. I'm 13 and my mom will not pay for the training, she said save your money but she has all my money. RAWR! Also she is 4yos and pees in the house! Any tips
Answers:
Walk your pup close to you. When she sees another dog ,make her focus on you and distract her attention from the dog. Make her sit until she is calm. You may ask a friend w/ a dog help you practice this. Do not get excited or try to sooth her as both these actions will encourage her. As for the peeing she may have to go out more often or she may have a health issue. Make sure she is on a regular routine of feeding, and potty breaks.
you are screwed. it's hard to try and teach an older dog to change. If you have a cage for your dog, you can put her in there when you are not in the house. Usually dogs won't go potty where they have to sleep all day. When you get home take her outside. Everytime you feed her, wait about 10 minutes and then take her outside until she goes potty. Now about her barking at other dogs, that it just natural. Some dogs are just more agressive then others. You might just have to live with the growling. Sorry
well look i have a dog to and he pees everywhere what u should do is when ur dog pees make it smell it and smack it on the nose thats what i did and now my dog pees outside and im 15 yrs old i get u!!
first you need to show her that you the boss to do this stand over her like put her between your legs that show her that you the one in charge not her. do this to when she around other dogs. she will learn.
my grandmas dog was like that because he was bullied by other dogs before my grandma took him in. introduce her to other dogs, slowly and on a leash. once she realizes the other dog is nice she will be fine. also try picking her up around other dogs and avoiding heavily crowded dog places
You are not being consistant with her, and of cause how can you expect a yorkie to attack a bigger dog (crazyness). They normally growl and snarl, but dont ever expect her to win a fight against a bigger dog.
You need to spend more time with your yorkie, it sounds like shes not getting the attention and training required. If your yorkie is 4yrs old, she should be used to not peeing in the house and know where to go. You have allowed her thus far to do what she wants and get away with it. Yorkies are attention seekers and normally do nasty things to get our attention. You should take her for more walks, but I know most yorkies pull on the leash, they just get so excited and want to run as fast as their little legs can pull them. Just keep the leash tight by your side and speak to her when walking, but you have to do this often for her to learn not to tug on the leash. She also has not been socialized with other dogs for her to hate other dogs.
Save up some money and take her to training classes, but in the meanwhile teach her to walk right and stop peeing in the home.

I need a inexpensive vet in Boise, ID?
We have three small puppies who need to get vaccinated soon and we need to find a realitivly inexpensive vet to get this done. Can anyone help?
Answers:
Many chain stores like Petsmart and Petco have vaccination clinics. Some shelters offer them too. Call the ones in your area and ask.
The last one I knew went bankrupt in 1987.
you get what you pay for. go get the female mother spayed, and stop breeding her if you can't afford to pay for a vet. then you take the puppies to the ASPCA and see if they can get them vaccinated. then sell the puppies. get every one fixed.

I need a good home remedy for worming my dog?
Answers:
There is no good home remedy. Go to a store and get some womer with either of the two following active ingredients-
Fenbendazole
pyrantel pamoate
Try to find the bottom one if you can. Don't buy the trash wormers and don't just read the marketing on the label - read the ingredient list. Get one of those. They only run $5 or so. Then worm the dog.
Forget home remedies -- go to the vet's office, or the farmer's co-op and get a real wormer.
And, if anyone suggests garlic for deworming, I'd be wary.
Well it depends on what kind of worms he has. There are some over the counter stuff you can buy, but it might not work if it's not the type of worm you have. You should take the dog to the vet and have it tested and the doctor can give it a shot to take care of the issue.
Is it a puppy? Older dog? what kind of worms does it have? More than likely they are roundworms from being around other dogs. There are noe home remedies. D-worm can be purchased at your local petstore but the best idea is to take your pup to the vet and for them to treat him with what we call "banana milkshake". (yes is does really taste like banana milkshake your pup will love it.)
A home remedey just won't work, get your dog "Drontal All Wormer." This treats for all intestinal parasites and can safely be given every 12 weeks for life if the dog is over 6 months, if not you need to follow the directions for puppies as de-worming is required more often. You can also buy a product like Advocate which de-worms though it doesn't cover tapeworm, and that is spread by fleas so best use the All-wormer.
It is DEworming and there are NO home remedies. Take your dog or a sample of stool to your vet and get a dewormer from them.

I was having trouble picking a name for my husky mix that both me and my boyfriend could agree on. We used puppy and baby naming sites, along with names that were from her origins.
I've always kinda done that. Wait and see if you come across a name that fits the puppy. Either based on his personality, markings, or size and so on. Sometimes if you just wait it out the right name will come to mind also.

It's a really super expensive coffee made from the collected droppings of the civet, a southeast Asian racoon-like mammal. Apparently the civet eats coffee beans and its digestive tract strips out all the more bitter tannins. When the beans pop out the other end, their supposed to make a really smooth coffee. People go around collecting the poop and selling it for megabucks. Go figure.

I need a free puppy near Tabor City North Carolina?
If you have one please help I dont want a older puppy I want a younger puppy
Answers:
There is NO SUCH THING as a free puppy. They need food, medical care, toys, brushes, spay/neuter, bowls, etc. If you don't have the money to adopt an animal from the Humane Society, you don't really have the money to care for one, do you. Please wait until you can afford to care for a new puppy and I bet one will jump right out at you!!
DASHUAN--it is good that you will buy anything the puppy needs. Why then do you need a free one? Please honey, go to the humane society and adopt a puppy. There are SO many who need your love and caring!! And they already have shots and some are already spayed/neutered. Call them up and visit. I know you will find just the right puppy for you. And believe me, they have a lot of puppies!!
i want a puppy 2
Nothing is free.
You don't need NOTHING !!
Why free? If you can't afford to pay for the puppy, can you afford to pay to feed it and take it to the vet when needed?
Free? Not quite.
What about the $30-$40 you'll need for a bag of a *good* brand of dog food?
Plus the puppy's shots...de-worming...
Don't forget to set aside at least $100 for a training class.
And another $100-$200 for a spay/neuter...
Plus toys...
A crate...
Grooming...
My puppy was only $75 when I got him
I have now spent another $475 on him in the last 3 months,
No dog is free or even 'cheap'
What do you want this puppy for? Breeding it in a backyard breeding/puppy mill operation? To feed to your snake? As a bait dog in a pitbull fighting operation?
People are wisening up to why they should never offer up puppies or kittens for free. I am not saying that you are doing any of the above, but that is why you aren't going to find one for free, and nothing in life is - No puppy is ever free. What about shots? Food? Supplies? Vet visits? Training? Kenneling when you are on vacation? A pooper scooper? Poop bags? and so on.
If you cannot afford to pay money for the puppy, then chances are, you don't have the money to properly take care of the puppy/dog.
No one gives puppies for free . Call your local Animal shelter they sure heave some puppies .
You might want to check with your local animal shelter. It will probably cost you a few bucks, $60-$75 or so, but you'll get a puppy that has already been fixed and has received it's shots.
Not only that if is not a no-kill shelter you will saving a dog that might otherwise be put down.
No puppy or dog is ever free. You have to consider supplies, food and water dishes, crate, toys, high quality dog food, brushes, doggy shampoo, nail clippers, ear wipes, and some others. Probably 300 for the lot if your dog is big. And, there is vet bills to consider. And you don't want a older pup (few months) you have to have a younger pup?? (8 wks.) If you are ready to take the responsibilities and the cost of these listed above, go to www.craigslist.com and pets. They have lots of free dogs, some puppies, though the puppies are usually pits, if you want one. When I was looking for my perfect chi, it took me 5 months to find the perfect one. I ended up getting her from a rescue for 300. I routinely checked craigslist.com. Through 5 months time I found 1 free chi that was gone in 2 hrs and a $25 chi that was gone in half a day. And you don't even know what breed you want? You just want a cute puppy...no dog stays a puppy

You just want a cute puppy...no dog stays a puppy

labrador retriever
Go to the nearest shelter. The adoption fee is less than $100, and those dogs need good homes.
I totally understand not wanting to pay big bucks for a registered purebred, but if you can't afford the adoption fee, you probably can't afford the cost of raising a dog.
U are not going to find a dog for free. you can adopt the dog from your local dog shelter, but u still have to pay.

I need a dog for security work what breed should i get??
Answers:
Defiantly either a German Sheppard or a Rottweiler they make good companions as well as excellent for security work as well...making sure you have a good bond and some good training and you will find that either are a good choice ! I have some friends in security and they are the top choices for security work ! Good Luck :-)
A good alarm system, camera setup.. Dogs are for companions, not guarding your junk..
German shepard,Rottweiler, pitbull either one will do but your best bet is to get a security system or a gun
Doberman
I had a Min-Pin that was the biggest little dog I've ever seen.
Dogs are NOT ment to be security items. They are ment to be family pets first and formost. powerful breeds must be handled with care and trained properly or you can get a very dangerous animal, especially if it is bored. If you want something that looks massive and impressive but has a heart of gold look at neopalitan mastiffs.
German Shepperad or a Rotweiller. Pit bulls are viscious dogs and can easily turn on their master even with good care and love. So anything but a pitbull is safe
What kind of security work? Personal protection, where you will be working with the dog all the time? Property protection, where the dog is expected to take the initiative? Alarm system, where you would be better off with cameras and electronics?
There is a great breed I know of for security...It's called an alarm system. But if you must have a dog for security..try a stuffed one with a camera eye..Dogs are meant to be your companions, not your security system. If a dog really loves you, then if he feels you are in danger he might try and protect you. But a dog should not be purchased solely for security purposes.
If you are referring to police work, such as drug sniffing, then a German Shepherd is a great breed.
doberman pinscher or german shepherd. despite all the hype, they are actually really really good pets. they tend to be animal aggressive, but that is usually not an issue. i have a german shepherd and she's a real sweet heart. they are intelligent so you can easily train them to commands, and if nothing else, their history will keep people away. people are automatically wary of dobermans, german shepherds and pit bulls. a poodle has just as many teeth as any of them and is actually way more owner protective but you don't hear about them being security dogs, lol.
Doberman
mastiff, they r loving, very gentle and smart yet very protective just the massive size will make ppl think twice the bark is very intimidating mastiffs will natural hold someone until the owner comes, they DO NOT need and should not be trained as "police dogs" are, mastiffs are natural protectors and usual r not "bitters" but r very stubborn and needs a type of owner who will not let the dog "bully" them, but they also require lots and lots and lots of love and attention, we own a old english mastiff, my husband works security in a very bad area and takes r dog to work with him and has no problems now, unlike the other 19 employees who has quit or refused to work the area, r dog has helped apprehend the would be thieves a few times, since then no thieves have been to his site it has been about 6 weeks now
I need a diagnosis for my dog in Vietnam?
There are no vets here. The dog has been lethargic and has gummy eyes in the morning. She is starting to lose the hair around her eyes. does anyone know what this is and how to cure it?
Answers:
I don't think anyone here is qualified to even make a guess.
Try the Yahoo group petvetcafe...there are real vets on there and they answer questions.
I'm sure it;s some sort of eye infection that requires antibiotics.
need more symptoms, fever, eating habits, stool runny or not? etc. been wormed lately??... U Could give antibiotics? and at least some anitibiotic eye ointments to start with, some are irritated with dusty conditions, dunno if this applies...
Here's a link for the various veterinarians in Vietnam: http://www.eguidevietnam.com/productserv...
There are vets anywhere there are animals that need taking care of.
sorry i never been in vietnam
If she were my dog, I'd get her some antibiotics. A broad-spectrum like Clavamox liquid. [or tablets depending on her size] See if that works. 2 - 3 weeks worth. I don't now if people antibiotics like Augmentum is OK to give a dog so I don't know what to tell you since there are not Vets... She needs a Vet for treatment.
Could you show us a photo? That would help a lot.
Oh,and Augmentin is the same as Clavamox,so a dog could take it.They can also take Amoxicillin,Keflex (really good for skin issues),Erythromycin,Penicilli... Tetracycline or Doxycycline. If you need to know the dosages, how much does the dog weigh?
The hair loss can be a sign of mange.Fronline Plus is used to treat mange. You can order it from many sites on the internet.I would try this, along with an antibiotic,if you can get them.

Well Honey,
I am so sorry. You really sound so sad. How about you write a poem about her. I bet she is making her new owners really happy.
We just can't keep them all. Spend more time w/ your bull dog (your dog, which ever one it is)
This will pass. (your mourning for the pup) I know you are so sad right now. You will fell better in a week or so... I promise!
Well if you know who bought maybe you can try and work out a deal
Go steal the dog back.
Or collect your own money and go buy the dog back. Its your dog, dont let your mom's bfr control anything, he's not your father. Talk to your mom also, women tend to be more sensitive. Tell her you're getting more depressed and cry at night and all that emotional stuff =D
This is my suggesting try not to think of her so much and think of something else other than her! Do something in your spare time insed of thinking of her! Do something! Go outside, get on the computer, text on your cell phone if you have one! That is my bast advice!! Hope it helps!

spare the rod, spoil the dog...correct him when you see him messing up...
take your puppy to obdiance class for puppies that will help you and him to learn training, you need to stop the bad behavior when he is young or it will only get worse, also take your pup for a couple of good long walks every day to burn energy, even if he has a yard to run in walks are very important , puppies get bored and the walks may also give him some variety, give him lots of chew toys and when he gets into something he is not supposed to firmly tell him no and distact him with something he is allowed to chew on
obedience classes... sound kinda like a "DUH" answer but it really will help, they will teach not only the dog but also YOU how to handle him when he's being a turd. Do it now before your parents get fed up and you have to rehome him. That wouldnt be fair to the dog or you. Also, get a crate, when your not home or cant watch him. Put him away. Lots of people think it's mean or whatever but its not and lots of times dogs will go in there to sleep or if they want to be left alone. Dont put him in there to punish him, it is supposed to be a good place and by the time you get him over there and inside after he's done something bad he wont connect the dots and understand that hes been bad so it wont do any good. Go and buy him some good toys, rubber kongs you can fill with stuff, natural bones are good, they crumble not splinter and have natural goodness inside that the dogs love, plus it cleans their teeth which is a good thing for bulldogs. Also you can buy Nylabone Gallileo bones at target and petsmart, they are amazing, almost indestructible and it would have to be a SERIOUS chewer to dent it.
I think if you get him plenty of DURABLE toys, (NO PLUSH or thin rubber and NEVER EVER give rawhides... they will get swallowed and can cause blockages.) especially treat toys he will be too busy to get into trouble!
Also, exercise is good, but since he's a bullie be careful, take him either early in the morning or after dark. Bulldogs DO NOT tolerate heat or cold well so short walks (20 mins) will do him in. I cannot stress enough how important it is NOT to walk in the heat of the day. One of our puppies from our female died at only a year old from walking in the middle of the day last summer. Please be careful with exercise!
Good luck, email me if you have any questions
dont spoil him so much especially when he does something wrong. simply correct him and move on. otherwise i would take him to and obedience class. (have you ever seen the show the dog whisperer? its on the national geografic channel and it is really good. it might help you. some of the things on there has helped my dog.)
Has this puppy nipped anybody in play or anything like that? If so, then yes you need to teach bite inhibition.
You do this by saying no firmly, stopping play altogether and turning your back until the puppy calms down. (I dont advise yelping with bully dogs because they can get so aroused in play).
When a puppy jumps on you, turn your back. It communicates 'no, calm down'.
If the dog doesnt nip or mouth you, but just tears his toys apart, I wouldn't be too worried. Many dogs play rough with their toys, and puppies are teething.
However, if he stalks, pounces, and shakes his toys, he IS showing that he has a high energy level and prey drive.
That means the dog needs to be socialized extensively around other people and children and other dogs as a puppy and shown appropriate behavior and manners.
With good training and bite inhibition, this dog may never be any problem to anybody. However, if this dog does not get socialization it is possible the dog will decide to play too rough or be fearful of people with bad consequences.
Your brother's attitude about training is not very good. Show him this:
www.puppyprodigies.com
and http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/program.cf...
Because your brother is young he may not realize that he could run into money problems and have to move into a new place that doesn't allow dogs... or just not pit bulls. Then, he would have to give his dog up.
It is his responsibility to be sure his dog is well behaved in case that happens, cause it sounds like your parents wouldn't want the dog to keep if he continues to behave this way.
Also, insurance will be more willing to cover his dog if the dog is a tested canine good citizen.
http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?articl...
He may not realize that his dog just jumping on somebody can be counted as an attack and the dog registered (or destroyed) as an dangerous dog, if the person falls down and is hurt by it. If it was a lab, maybe not big deal, but bully breeds, they will be sentenced to death.
I assume when you say this is a big bulldog you mean an american bulldog (which looks like a "big pit bull" to most people who don't know breeds), not the smaller English bulldog with the squashed face?
My own dog who is a service dog was given up when he was 6 months old because he was 3/4 of adult size and had never been trained. He was in a shelter for 2 months and got basic training and passed a CGC.
I took him and I continued his socialization and CGC training. I got a real treasure of a dog, but if his owner had thought to try and train and take care of a dog properly, he wouldn't have been in a shelter 2 months and risked death row just for being a nice friendly puppy with lots of energy and nobody to train him.
You might want to talk to your parents about finding obedience classes near your house, (check online-- dog training clubs), and give your brother and his girlfriend an ultimanium-- train the dog, your parents will help pay for it, or they can start looking right now for a new place to live that will take their dog. It'll be an eyeopener how hard that is.

I love my husband but I hate our new dog, how can I tell him to get rid of it?
I just moved to Japan with my husband and not even 7 days after I got here, he decides to get a hard headed fully grown pit bull who is shedding all over the place and he doesnt listen well. he gets on my nerves and I dont like being around him so i stay upstairs, we argue constantly about the dog and my husband keeps spending more and more and more money to make this muts life comfortable. how can I get my husband to get rid of the dog without hearing about it for the next 20 years. I know he wont let me forget. help me!

I wouldn't put up with this. Your husband is supposed to love you and put your interests first - he sounds like a selfish kid who wants a new toy and stamps his feet until he gets it. I would wait until he's out, or away, and take the dog to the pound, if they have one in Japan. If the dog is microchipped, call the register and change the details to something fictional so they can't get in touch with you. Then act all innocent - oh dear, the dog escaped! Your husband did something very sneaky - so be sneaky right back at him!
Sounds like a compromise is in order. He should not have gotten the dog without discussing it with you, but that ship has sailed. Instead, how about a compromise where you both agree on a dog breed? That way he gets to have the canine companionship, and you get to have a dog that meets some of your requirements.
Try feeding him some Chinese dog food.
Why did he get this dog? Write a list of the problems you have with the dog. Practice the talk you will have with your husband and don't get emotional. Keep it reasonable. Ask him to listen to your concerns so that he knows what you are thinking and feeling.
Having a dog you are afraid of is a nightmare.
Unfortunately, your marriage is doomed. It's obvious you are not a dog lover, or you only like pure-bred yippy yappy lap dogs. It wasn't wise for your husband to get a dog without you're being a part of the decision making process. The only thing that's good about it is you can get a divorce now before there are children involved. There's a lot of things between the lines here; shedding, hard-headed, and doesn't listen well. It's a dog. Most dogs shed, and most are fairly hard headed at first, some more than others. If you loved, and I mean really loved your husband you would understand his attachment to the dog. If you liked dogs, you would learn to love the dog, too and you'd try to bond with someone who obviously means a lot to your husband. And, since he cares this much for the dog...enough to put up with arguing; maybe he's trying to find a soul-mate since he didn't find one in marriage. My wife and I don't agree on everything, but we do agree on our mutual love for dogs. I couldn't live with someone who couldn't love my dogs as much as I do.
Even though I am ex-military, even though I am a dog-lover, and even though I successfully kept the same dog my entire Air Force career...I've seen enough, of enough kinds of things, to have become very hard-core about the whole issue of military family life--pets included.
The Roman Legions did not allow a soldier to marry until he retired. Uncle Sam should be so wise. I do not believe active-duty military should have a family *or* a pet. The member needs to keep his or her mind on the job, and be ready to pick up and pull out at a moment's notice, and that's no kind of life for an animal or a sensitive spouse.
The armed forces have some of the highest rates of spouse and child abuse anywhere. Ever.
And every summer, when so many people get transferred to their next duty stations, the animal-control officials on the 'losing' installation must brace themselves for the inevitable: Pets abandoned, either left tied up in housing or dumped elsewhere on base, by servicemembers who "can't" (read: *won't*) take their animals with them.
I can only guess what wholesome lessons this teaches their kids. Responsibility? --Not. Lifetime commitment to a relationship? --Not. Empathy for another living thing? --Not.
You see where I'm going with this. Your husband possesses none of these characteristics. He is not fit to have a wife *or* a pet. You could hang in there for the two or three years it'll take 'til his next move, when he'll probably sell the dog to a sushi bar or something--then you'll be rid of it. Or you could take the hint and say to yourself, "Hey, this man just made a major change to our lives and our living environment *without even consulting me*, and is allowing it to go on even after he sees it's had a negative effect on me." Then come to your own conclusions.
Me, I'd take the dog (the pooch doesn't deserve to be in that situation either!), leave the man, and find a rescue program that'll foster the animal until they can find a *healthy* home environment for it. Go find one for you, too. And take some time to enjoy Japan while you're there. Good luck.
No, your marriage is not doomed but Bozopolis has got something there. He sounds like Dr. Laura Schlessinger! :)
a-Navy wife, you really need to stop throwing a tantrum. You're not a brat child. Any victory won in marriage by throwing a fit or manipulation is no victory at all.
Grow up and be completely devoted to your husband. He is not getting what he needs from you now. I can tell that just by what little you wrote.
Marriage is WORK. Any great marriage is hard won.
Get a trainer to teach you how to train your husband's dog and be happy he's not cheating on you.
OR...admit to your husband that you don't want to work with him even on minor issues like having a pet and let him be free of you before there are children brought into the equation. Sheesh.
Good luck.
Kick your husband out right now, or pack your bags. How DARE he make a major decision like that without even consulting you? This man obviously has no respect for you, your opinions or your comfort. He is a bigtime creep and you should tell him so before you walk out on him! Badmouth him to his commanding officers, then sue his backside off for whatever you can get out of him. He truly deserves it.
Lmao your marrige isnt doomed, But you really need to learn to love that dog becasue being a dog person myself once you get one you will never want to give it up, so i am guessing your hasband will not want to give it up either.
dog is mans best friend unfortunatley wifes are not!
He sheds and doesn't listen well. If those are the reasons why you want to "get rid of the dog" (I HATE THAT PHRASE) I would say those are some pretty pathetic reasons. You don't even want to give the dog a chance.
If I were your husband I would "get rid of" you.
It sounds like you haven't given the dog a chance. I realize it was a major decision to be made without you, but you could end up loving this dog, and it will be your companion when your husband is not around. Is it the fact that it is a Pit Bull that you don't like? Give it time, have your hubby keep it brushed to keep up with the shedding. The dog is being hard headed because it can sense you don't like him. Assert yourself as the Alpha role in the house and things will get better.
Well first off it sounds as if your being a spoiled whiney brat! Most dogs shed so that is something you should just get used to. Seems as if you are jealous of the dog because your husband is spending time and money on it and not you. You need to grow up already. I am sure this dog really wants nothing more than to please both of his new owners! Looks like this may not be your only problem. Your husband did not want to consult you on the idea of getting a dog because he knew you would act in such a childish manner about the subject.
You need to burry that hatchet you are carrying around about this dog. He did not come into your home with the intention of causing such fights between you and your husband. You need to partake in the training of this pet and open you mind and your heart to him. The reason he does not listen to you well is because you don't spend ANY time with him and he can tell that you don鈥檛 like him. If he was already full grown when he came to your family he might have trust issues and that is why he is not behaving for you. He might be scared that you will just get rid of him too. Believe me if you make your husband get rid of his new best friend he will resent you more than you resent this poor dog. That is not something I would want on my hands. So have an open mind and an open heart lady geez!
