I've tried taking him out frequently, puppy pads, crate training. Nothing seems to work. He will go outside for me sometimes but sometimes he won't, then when we go in, he will go potty in the house. Does he just not get it? I'm running out of patience. I need someone to give me some good advice on how to potty train him. I don't want to get rid of him but I also can't continue to just let him poop and pee all over my carpet. Someone PLEASE help! He's 2 1/2 years old now. Is he maybe just to old to potty train?

That sounds like a real problem. First off, hope he's neutered.
I can work to get the dog trained, but it will tale some real work on your part. First thing I would do is tie the dog to my waist , so it can not EVER be out of site. If you have to go to work or whatever, crate him while you're gone. Control his meals to 2 small portions each day, nothing else.
While he is tied to you, if you see him start rooting around it's time to go out, say something like "lets go potty" take him out just as he's about to go, then make him come right back in the house, and tie him to your waist again. If you see him hike his legs or squat to go in the house, yell NO!! real loud and fast, then grab him and take him out again. You can even tie a bell on the door and ring it every time you go out to take him potty. he may pick up ringing it when he has to go. If he's pottying at night while you're sleeping, then just keep him in a crate at night. Make sure to put the crate as far away from you when you sleep, so if he potty's in it, he can sit in it all night w/o you hearing him whine. After a while he'll figure out that it's not fun sleeping in your own "stuff". If you feed him about 5pm, and get him out before bed, there is no reason a 2 year old dog can't hold it thru the night.
Hope this helps, GL
buy a kennel and put him outside
Wow, this is nuts.. Stay outside with the dog til he is empty.. That way when you go inside with him, he has nothing left to do in the house.. Forget the silly puppy pads and all those ridiculous things. Get a crate, crate train him.. If you can't watch him, if you go out etc, put him in his crate.. Let him out and take him outside immediately.. GO WITH HIM.. Tell him to pee, when he does, PRAISE him, make a huge fuss. Bigger fuss when he is outside and pees, than when he is inside and you are mad cause he peed..
Ignore his accidents in the house unless you catch him in the act. When you catch him, tell him NO, and take him outside immediately.. Praise Praise, Praise.. It's what's going to encourage him to pee outside rather than inside.. He is getting attention for peeing in the house.. Attention is attention.. You want him to think that peeing outside is the way to get attention..
If you find he isn't getting it.. Put his water dish outside the back door. Dogs for some reason find it easier to tell you that they want a drink than they do to tell you they need to pee...
you have enable this dog ,to control you ,
time to quit that crap eh ?
feed him ,water him ,and take him out side, walk him around till he does it , then praise him ,
if that wont work try this , crate him , then feed him then walk him. if he still pees, in side , you will have to correct him ,
i mean a choke chain ,
but try the water/feeding first , and stick to it
good luck ,
He sounds like a dog that loves to play!! My nephew has a mini-pincher..this dog took so long to train..He would go out with the bigger dogs. The bigger ones just wanted to go and get back in..The smaller, mini-pincher, just wanted to play..Believe it or not, toddlers do this too!!..They never want to stop playing and crap their pants..(for lack of a better word...lol) I believe you will have to stay out longer..When the dog goes in the house take it outside and place it where you want him/her to go...Eventually, with their smelling abilities, he/she should learn soon... Good luck sweetie..never give up! If you need more advice please e-mail me!!

first take him to the vet and make sure there isn't a medical condition that's causing the problem. have you had him for over 2 years or is that just how old he is? you need to pick one method and stick to it. the main thing would be to throw away the puppy pee pads. with those you have just taught him it's ok to go in the house. and then sometimes you ask him to go outside. he doesn't get it. get a crate that is of proper size. they need room to stand up, turn around and lay down. that's it. anything bigger and he can go in the crate and get away from it. keep him in the crate anytime you cannot directly observe him. but make sure it's not for long periods or most of the day. you're going to have to make extra time to fix this problem. if he's not neutered do so. that can be part of the problem. next have your carpets steam cleaned to help get rid of the smell. that way you are starting fresh. get him on a feeding, playing and going potty schedule. you're going to have to stick pretty close to this schedule at first because of his age. if you know when he's eating and about the time's he needs to potty you can better get him outside to do it. as soon as you let him out of his crate take him straight outside. give him plenty of time to do all of his business. and when he does praise him like no other dog has ever gone potty outside before! you will have to stand outside with him, while you are training him. when you're back inside keep a close eye on him every moment. if he goes to potty somewhere. and by this time you should know what he does when he's about to potty inside. say no in a firm but not yelling voice. take him back outside and wait for him to go again. praise him again. keep doing this. be consistantly consistant with this. be patient. you have years of mislearning to correct. it will not happen overnight. but if you are consistent, patient and loving he will get the hang of it. good luck.
if anyone ever wants to correct a dog of mine by using a choke chain for just going potty inside you and i are going to have words. as an actual dog trainer you wouldn't refer to it as a choke chain, since it's only a choke chain when not being used for training. it's a training collar. and it only to be worn when doing training exercises. you're a dog trainer fine, i'm an astronaut.
Ok. Feed him only morning and only night. We had some trouble with our bichon and it does some time. We had a small deck, so, half an hour later, he goes out onto the deck and once he has done his business, in he comes. He does not come in until he has done it. To start he might not get it and will just do it in his own time, but if your watching him, once done, let him in with lots and lots of praise and cuddles. Eventually he will know the sooner he does it the sooner he will be let in. By the way, if possible dont go out there with him. Isolate him so its boring.
