I have a pup and would like to know how to train him to go outside to pee & what to do when he goes inside?
Answers:
Well you should always keep a good watch on your puppy when it's inside. Watch for it, if it looks like it is smelling around to look for a place to go potty, then pick it up and take it outside and wait a while and see if it goes to the bathroom.
You also have to keep a good watch on your puppy for when it is sleeping. Usually about 2-5 minutes after a puppy wakes up from sleeping at night, or a nap, it has to go to the bathroom.
Even if your puppy didn't just wake up, or isn't sniffinf around, you should still take it outside every hour.
When it does go outside, praise it and give it a treat. Just let it know, it did something that it should've been doing.
When it goes inside, use a stern voice, talk like your serious, but don't yell, and call it bad, and show it what it did wrong, but don't hit it!! Then, take it outside and say you go outside, in a stern voice, yet again. After about 5-10 minutes of having it outside, take it inside. If it does go outside when you take it out after being bad, praise it.
Taking you dog for walks regularly, will limit messes in the house aswell.
Another method i find works well, is the cage method. This is where you go out and get a cage thing where the puppy can stay at night. But make sure it is big enough for it to move around. It will whine, for about a week, until it gets use to being put in it at night time. When your puppy is fully house-trained, then you don't have to put it in the cage. Putting it in the cage, just limits nightly messes that you don't know about, that you can't scold them for, and from my experience, it makes house-training A LOT easier.
HOW TO HOUSEBREAK A PUPPY/DOG AS PAINLESSLY AS POSSIBLE FOR BOTH YOU AND PUPPY/DOG
This is geared for puppies, but with minor adjustments will work just as well for older dogs. Small puppies have very little bladder control, but as they grow they do not need to go as often. For instance, a 6 week old puppy will need to relieve himself right after waking, while a 3 month old puppy will be able to eat before going out. That part just depends on the individual dog and you can determine that by observation and learning their habits. And as with all training, keep it simple and don't confuse them with too many words. For instance, it's not a big help to catch them having an accident and say NO! Bad dog, shame on you, you were just out why did you do this, etc. Keep it simple. And PATIENCE!! Don't get mad, they really do the best they can at it :)
Puppy wakes up in the morning. You take your puppy outside so he can relieve himself. You go along (ALWAYS) to make sure he doesn't get completely distracted by birds, squirrels, butterflies, etc. and forget he needs to go until he comes back inside and has an accident. If you find your puppy gets too distracted outside, try putting him on a lead. After all, this is training. You say to puppy 'Potty outside'. Praise him (GOOD BOY! POTTY OUTSIDE!) when he does so. You bring him back inside immediately and feed him. Wait about 5 minutes and take him back outside to relieve himself again, saying the command 'Potty outside', praise and bring back inside. As an added boost teach your puppy what outside means. Every time you are taking him out, take him to the door and say to him "OUTSIDE", then walk out the door with him. Pretty soon he will understand what outside means which can come in handy later for other things as well as be a huge help here. After you bring the puppy back in for the second time, spend some time playing with the puppy, then allow him some rest time. If you are in the same room, confine him to that room. If not, crate him for an hour or so, then take him back outside. Your puppy should be given regular intervals (at least every 3 hours) outside to relieve himself throughout the day. He should be confined in a crate, or in the same room with you while he's inside. Expect accidents to happen because they will. You should be watching your puppy very closely while he isn't crated. The more often you catch them in the act, the faster they learn and you MUST be consistent! When you catch them having an accident say loudly and firmly 'NO! Potty outside!', then immediately take them out to do your outside training. The idea is to startle them into stopping what they are doing. If raising your tone doesn't work, make a throw can out of an old metal band-aid box. Fill the inside with old keys or coins and tape it shut. Throw the can down near the dog and say 'NO! Potty outside!'. Do not bring them back indoors until the accident is cleaned up. You can use enzyme cleaners for accidents and they work well, or you can use vinegar (1/4 cup to half pail water) which works also. On rugs either cleaner will have to dry before the puppy can be allowed back in the area..you don't want them to be able to smell it. Keep in mind that the more you allow your dog confined freedom and the more you catch him in the act, the faster he learns. And when crating, never crate them without making sure they have relieved themself before crating. To help them get through the night, feed them their last meal no later than 5 o'clock and take up the water about an hour or two before bedtime. If you work during the day you cannot expect them to go all day. Buy a WIRE crate, one big enough for them to move around in freely, preferrably one that will accomadate their full grown size and leave it open in a confined room, say the kitchen or even a large bathroom. You will need to put papers or training pads down for a place they can relieve themself. When you come home, take them outdoors and bring them back in after the floors are cleaned and resume a fair schedule during the time you are home. As you see that the puppy can stay out of the crate or confined rooms longer, you can begin to extend the times between their walks outside. It won't be long before you can feed puppy, then take him out. Once you see the puppy is consistantly going outside you can forget housetraining and move onto other things, but don't consider them reliable until they've gone a month accident free. Don't rush, that will only prolong it. Remember that YOU are the key to housebreaking. The more consistant you are, the more closely you watch for accidents, the faster YOU get through to the puppy what is expected of them.
when he goes inside growl at him n say no n rub his nose in it.
if he is about to go say no n then take him outside,
every hour go outside with him and say "go potty" in a stern voice wait out there until he does go. when he is done give him a treat and say goodboy ang scratch him, let him know he did what he wa supposed to do. and when he goes to the bathroom inside say bad boy! and put him in a different room. hope this helps!! :)
i would recomend crate training. you get one that either has a cage speparator, or that is only enough room for him to sleep and eat. dogs will not mess where they sleep. you should keep him in there for an hour less than is age...meaning if he is three months old you have to take him outside every 2 hours. if he is only 1 month old you should be taking him out every 15-30 minutes. outside...meaning to the area that you want him to go on. he'll get used to this. and depending how liberal you are through all of this and how smart your dog is, hell know to go outside in no time. also when he pees inside the house. if you do not catch him in the act you do NOTHING. they will not remember what they did, and theyll just think you are mean. sorry its true, if you do catch him right in the act than spray him with squirt bottle filled with water. thats about it
OK this is how i trained my puppy. I took him out everytime he got done each activity.(eatting drinking playing and sleeping.) If you catch him in the act say no in a firm voice or you could even clap and outside he goes. dont yell or scream at him thats attention. just take him outside. leave him out there for about 3-5 minutes. Go outside no attention lead him to the grass or where ever you want him to go. When he goes outside then you give him attention. They want attention,so take away the attention when he is bad. soon he will learn. ALso if you dont catch him in the act you can't punish him, they dont remember 30 seconds back. Also keep your puppy outside till he goes potty because my puppy wouldnt go outside so i took him in and he had an accedent. also this helps too always use the same door to go outside he will soon sit at the door to go out. I took me a full month to potty train my puppy consistance is the key! Hope this helps!
