Have the groomer do it. It is very easy to injure the dog if you don't know what you are doing.
Only if you know what you are doing - why don't you just take her to a groomer, or Petco's groomers.
Stay there and watch, then try it yourself.
I would wash the dog down and use a good doggie conditioner. It will help when you brush her. Also you may want to keep her hair short- clippers are fine. I had to do this with our dog too.
Good luck!
If she's that bad, she needs clipping by a professional groomer.
Heavily matted, thick fur=needs good quality clippers, not the cheapies. Do you own a pair of Osters? Do you know how ot use them?
If not, take her in to the groomer. Too many owners end up cutting or burning skin, because they have no clue what they are doing.
if you get her wet first it just makes the matts worse. you are using the wrong tool on her %26 obviously not doing it enough.
have her done now by a professional %26 then keep after it.
matts cause hot spots %26 hot spots draw maggots.
If you have a very high quality brand of clippers and feel confident that you can have the dog hold still while you clip then you can try it at home. DO NOT bathe the dog first however, the water will end up making the mats tighter and even harder to get out. If the dog is very wiggly or your clippers are not quite up to par I would just take the dog to a groomer for a good clip and brushing, that way you can start fresh and try to keep up with the grooming. Also make sure you have the correct style of grooming tools to use at home, some brushes work better for different hair types, and there are special mat rakes that help break up mats in longer haired dogs so you can free it up and brush it out rather than have to shave or cut out chunks of fur on the dog.
DO NOT BATHE YOUR PET FIRST! It will only cause the mats to tighten. If you you do not know how to give your dog a cut, take her to the groomer. You can injure your pet if you do not know what you are doing. Good luck!
If she is matted it would be a good idea to bring her to the groomers, many times mats have to be cut out.
Also use a comb on her as well, the brush will get mainly the outer coat, so you need a comb to help get down to the skin.
If you ever bathe her at home, you need to brush and comb out her fur once she is dry, if not, then the mats can get even worse.
