I have just purchased a Chihuahua... How do u train a pup to be left alone and also not be so dependent on me?
Answers:
You don't. You chose a breed that wants to be held and adored. These dogs are like babies. If you wanted an independent dog you should have gotten a hound.
Dogs cannot be left alone and unattended, unless in a crate, until they are one year old.
Once they reach about a year, they are quite a bit more independent.
Dogs are dependent- if you wanted independent you should have gotten a cat.
Chihuahuas are very dependent puppies! It was a bad choice if you don't want it to be all over you. they love people.
Its a baby now and probably needs alot of love and attention (i have a chihuahua) my Coco slowly outgrew that (shes not even a year now) but they always will tend to be loving and attatched. Good luck! ;)
Train them to be in a small kennel every day at the same time, for the same amount of time - and try NOT to pay attention to them when the are kenneled - putting the cage in a corner of say your kitchen is good - if they bark or whine, sharply and firmly say "NO" - they will get used to being alone and quiet, and it is NOT cruel - the kennel is great if you have to be out all day because it keeps them safe and not tempted to chew your furniture etc.
Dogs can't be left alone though.
If you want ot go somwhere or have work, then you can have someone watch it for you?
Leave food out for your dog, there are responsabilties to having a dog. So..just take care of it, and train it well...
Well my oldest dog didn't get to be left alone until she was 4 years old. But my newest puppy who just turned a year old still has to use the backyard dog kennel. You just need to let it be, and everyime you go somewhere put it in a kennel. Eventually you'll be able to trust the puppy to be responsable for itself. When your doing something and your dog is bothering you, cheak if it has food or water or if it hs to go out, and if it just wants to play, ignore it. You can play with it later.
That is why it is very important to read a lot about a breed before purchasing a dog. Chihuahuas focus their devotion on one person, becoming overly jealous of that person's human relationships. This is in her nature, if you wanted an independent dog a chow chow would of been better suited. As for leaving her alone, start slowly by leaving her on her own for short period of time. When you leave your home, DO NOT say good bye or pet her, she will miss you more, just leave as if you were just picking your mail out the door.
